Syntax Exchange

Privacy Policy

Effective October 2, 2026

The short version
  • You can use Syntax Exchange without an account. Then everything stays in your browser and we never receive it.
  • If you sign in with Google, we store your practice data in your account so it syncs across your devices.
  • We never record your voice, show ads, use tracking cookies or sell your data.
  • You can ask us to delete your account and all its data at any time.

Who we are

Syntax Exchange is a speaking-practice web app for language exchange partners, available at syntaxexchange.app. It is built and run by the Syntax Exchange team. You can reach us at hello@syntaxexchange.app, or at privacy@syntaxexchange.app for anything about your data.

What we collect

If you don't sign in

Your notes, decks, session history and settings are saved only in your browser's storage on your device. Word lists are downloaded and cached in the browser so the app works offline. None of this is sent to us.

If you sign in with Google

DataWhere it comes fromWhy
Email address, name and profile pictureYour Google account, when you sign inTo create your account, show who is signed in, and contact you about your account
School domain (e.g. university.edu)Taken from your email address, only if it looks like a school addressTo understand which schools use the app
Notes (the corrections you or your partner write), custom decks and session records (which games you played, when, and for how long)You, while using the appTo keep your practice and spaced-repetition review in sync across your devices
Settings (languages, levels, preferences)YouSo the app works the same on every device
Daily practice minutes and number of cards reviewed, per language (and the room partner, for practice together)Counted while you playTo grow your practice tree and the tree you share with a partner

Notes and practice data you created before signing in are moved into your account only if you choose to keep them when you sign in.

If you enter an AI service key in Settings, it is stored only on that device. It is never uploaded to our servers.

If you practice in a remote room

When you join a room, your partner sees your Google name, profile picture and practice languages. Corrections your partner writes for you are saved to your account, marked with who wrote them, so they appear in your notes and review. Room records (who was in the room and its game state) are deleted 30 days after the room ends. Your partner can see the minutes you practiced together, not your solo practice or notes.

What we never collect

Read-aloud

The read-aloud button uses your browser's built-in speech feature. Depending on your browser and the voice it chooses, your browser may send the text being read to its own provider (for example, some online voices in Chrome). We don't receive or store it.

Services we use

Each provider processes data under its own privacy policy and only to provide its service to us. We do not sell or share your data with anyone else.

How your data is protected

All traffic uses HTTPS. In our database, every user's data is protected by access rules that let only that signed-in user read or change their own records.

Keeping and deleting your data

Children

Syntax Exchange is not directed at children under 13. If you are under 13, please use the app without signing in.

Your rights

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct, export or delete your personal data, or to object to how it is used. To use any of these rights, contact privacy@syntaxexchange.app.

Changes

If we change this policy, we will update the date at the top and, for significant changes, tell signed-in users in the app.
